Tsukioka Onsen

Vivid emerald green water

The hot spring resort has made a name for itself as a hot spring resort in the backcountry of Niigata, and in recent years, a variety of interactive stores have opened with the aim of creating a hot spring resort town that makes visitors want to walk around.

The beautiful emerald green color of the hot water is so vivid that many people mistake it for the color of bath salts.

Depending on the season and weather conditions, the color of the water may change to a milky white or other colors. It is said that people in the past used to look at the color of the hot spring water instead of the weather forecast.

It is known for its high sulfur content, the second highest in Japan after Manza Onsen.
The hot spring town is filled with the aroma of sulfur, creating a hot spring atmosphere.

You can also drink the hot spring water at the “fountainhead forest” located in the hot spring’s birthplace. However, the drinking spring in Tsukioka is self-proclaimed to be the worst drinking spring in Japan.

It is mildly alkaline, which is unusual for a sulfur spring, and is gentle on the skin. The spring also has a high thermal effect, as is typical of chloride hot springs, and the water does not easily cool down.

The spring is a sulfur containing sodium chloride hot spring (slightly alkaline, hypotonic, high temperature spring), and the temperature of the source is approximately 50 degrees Celsius.
